After a few music videos and small roles, her big break came in 2000 when she was cast as Tulsi Virani in Ekta Kapoor’s Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The show became a cultural phenomenon, and Smriti Irani became a household name. Her portrayal of Tulsi, a strong yet compassionate woman, resonated with millions and made her an icon of Indian television.
Entering Public Life and Shaping Policy
Smriti Irani’s passion, however, extended beyond acting. In 2003, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), driven by a desire to contribute to society. Though her initial attempts in electoral politics were met with setbacks—including an unsuccessful run against Rahul Gandhi in Amethi in 2014—she demonstrated perseverance. Later, in a historic 2019 election, she defeated Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, marking a turning point in her political career.
As Minister of Human Resource Development (2014–2016), Smriti Irani initiated reforms to make education more inclusive and skill-oriented. She advocated for the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) to bring transparency and quality benchmarking in higher education.
