Introduction

Maharaja Ranjit Singh was born in 1780 AD in a Jat Sikh family. On the death of Maha Singh, Ranjit Singh became the leader of the Misl Sukerchakia at the age of twelve. In 1798 AD, when Zaman Shah returned from Punjab, he took over Lahore.
Gradually, they brought under their control all the misls that were ruling from the Sutlej to the Indus.

Life Story of Maharaja Ranjit Singh

Maharaja Ranjit Singh was the primary Maharaja of the Sikh Realm. He is celebrated by the title of Sher-e Punjab. Maharaja Ranjit was an individual who not only united Punjab but also did not permit the British to enter his realm during his lifetime.

Early Life and Childhood of Maharaja Ranjit Singh

Ranjit Singh was born in 1780 in Gujranwala (presently Pakistan) to Maharaja Maha Singh. In those days, Punjab was ruled by Sikhs and Afghans who had divided the entire region into a few misls. Ranjit's father, Maha Singh, was the commander of Sukerchakia Misl. He was, as it were, 12 years old when his father passed away, and the complete burden of the kingdom fell on his shoulders. On 12 April 1801, Ranjit Singh accepted the title of Maharaja. A relative of Guru Nanak Ji performed his crowning ritual.

Major Battles of Maharaja Ranjit Singh

He made Lahore his capital and moved towards Amritsar in 1802. Maharaja Ranjit fought many battles against the Afghans and drove them towards western Punjab. Now they had control over the Pashtun region, including Peshawar. This was the first time that Pashtuns were ruled by a non-Muslim. After that, he also captured Peshawar, Jammu, Kashmir, and Amritsar. He also gets the credit for forming the first modern Indian army - "Sikh Khalsa Army".

Under his patronage, Punjab was now a very powerful state. This powerful army kept Britain from capturing Punjab for a long time. There came a time when Punjab was the only state that was not under the control of the British. Maharaja Ranjit himself was illiterate. But he gave great encouragement to education and art in his kingdom. He established law and order in Punjab and never gave a death sentence to anyone.

Tax Policies of Maharaja Ranjit Singh

His province was secular, and he also banned the Jaziya tax levied on Hindus and Sikhs. Never forced anyone to adopt Sikhism. He installed marble and gold-plated the Harimandir Sahib Gurudwara in Amritsar, and since then, it has come to be known as the Golden Temple. The precious diamond Kohinoor was the pride of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's treasury.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s Passing

Maharaja Ranjit died in the year 1839. His tomb was built in Lahore, which still stands there. With his death, the British began to tighten their grip on Punjab. After the Anglo-Sikh War, on 30 March 1849, Punjab was made a part of the British Empire, and the Kohinoor was presented to Victoria.
